AI boom drove Nvidia profits up 580% last year

That result helped bring the company’s full-year profits up more than 580% from the year earlier. Nvidia also posted fourth quarter revenue gains of 265% year-over-year, also exceeding analyst projections, as the company continues to ride the wave of massive AI investment. And US restrictions introduced last year on exports of advanced AI chips to China, which affected products like Nvidia’s H800 and A800 chips, threaten to choke off access to a massive and fast-growing market. Still, others on Wall Street believe the company still has plenty of room to run. “The outlook for Nvidia is positive as AI chip competition from Intel, AMD, Meta and Microsoft could be months away while demand for Nvidia chips is only surging,” Insider Intelligence senior analyst Gadjo Sevilla said in a note earlier this week.

Despite doubling its EV deliveries in 2023, Rivian reported a $5.4 billion loss for the year. In an email to Business Insider, Rivian did not specify exactly how many salaried staff members would be cut, but said that it has 16,700 total employees, including both salaried and hourly workers. Snap reported an increase of just 5% year-over-year, its sixth straight quarter of single-digit growth or a decline in sales. For the first quarter, Snap projected revenue of $1.095 billion to $1.135 billion, which would equal growth of between about 11% and 15%. Broadly, the digital ad market is recovering from a brutal 2022, when soaring inflation and rising interest rates led brands to reel in spending.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday that its profit for the October-December quarter soared 33%, powered by its significant investments in artificial intelligence technology. The company said that increase largely reflected growth in its cloud-computing unit, where Microsoft focuses most of its AI investments. “Microsoft is firmly establishing itself as a frontrunner in the AI race,” said Jeremy Goldman, director of briefings at Insider Intelligence. In addition to other benefits, Goldman suggested that AI technology could help expand Microsoft’s share of digital advertising. That merger boosted Microsoft's revenue growth by four points, according to James Ambrose, the company's director of investor relations.
